NASA GRC Adopt-a-Highway Program

As part of the State of Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT)-sponsored Adopt-a-Highway Program we help to maintain the grassy areas adjacent to the John H. Glenn Highway I-480/Grayton Road interchange by conducting a once-a-month litter removal activity. This program was initiated at Lewis Research Center/Glenn Research Center in 1995 and is sponsored internally as an ongoing community service activity by the GRC Earth Day Committee and the Office of External Affairs. The I-480/Grayton Road interchange is an important highway area in the GRC neighborhood and an area that serves as the gateway to Cleveland for many visitors who arrive at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. We have gloves, safety vests, trash bags and the other essentials for the job. Transportation is provided in a GRC van(s) and truck. The ODOT usually helps us out by putting up "Caution" signs and orange cones to alert drivers that people are deployed close to the highway. Our efforts are acknowledged by two signs on I-480.

The safety of our participants in this activity is one of the major concerns. For anyone who has not participated before, there is a requirement to watch a short video on highway cleanup safety before participating in this activity. To fulfill this requirement, please click on the video above and watch it for the safety rules that govern this activity. Any questions, call Rich Kalynchuk at 216.433.3724.

We welcome the participation of anyone from the GRC family. Cleanups are normally scheduled monthly during the spring, summer and fall months - - and rescheduled if the weather does not cooperate.

Special thanks to the NASA Dining Service - Acorn Services, Inc. (GRC Cafeteria) for graciously donating bottled water for volunteers on clean-up days!

Special thanks to the GRC TFOME partner companies, Sierra Lobo, Jacobs Sverdrup and Gilcrest for the involvement of some of their employees. And similar "thank you's" to Zin Technologies and the OAI for their involvement in this program.
