SAMS Background

Since June 1991, when SAMS made its inaugural flight on STS-40, the device has flown successfully on 22 missions either on board the Shuttle or the Russian Mir Space Station. SAMS has gathered more than 50 gigabytes of acceleration data. This system enjoys an international reputation for accuracy and reliability and for allowing access to its data.

NASA is also designing and building SAMS-II for the International Space Station, which uses state-of-the-art digital output sensor heads.

The same NASA-contractor team that developed the SAMS flight units is responsible for the development of the SAMS-FF.
